Are your kids safe on the street?

There are often stories on the news about kids that have been kidnapped, or stolen, or hurt. There are also stories about over protective parents. They won't let their kids go to the milk bar or catch a train without an adult.

How do you find a balance? Do you feel like your kids are safer in certain areas? How old do they need to be before you let walk somewhere alone?

We are new to Melbourne. So we ourselves are prone to getting lost unless we have a copy of the map or GPS. So leaving kids alone is out of question. After reading jonaj's answer, its so scary.
While there have been some real horror stories with child abductions I still feel as though safety around traffic is even more important. Letting kids out the front exposes them to car and traffic danger. And also fumes.

At the end of the day though, not everyone has the room oh the back of their place to let kids play. And that's important too.
Today, kids are Not safe on the streets.
I have worked in Gaol's for the last 13 years . I will tell you it takes less than a minute....to take a child.
Forget 'why'....and that 'we should have the right'...There are people out there....who 'if' given the chance, will take a child. In my opinion (I have three sons). To walk the street alone, maybe 14.
It is that serious, because you will never know from where,or when it will happen.
You never want to take that risk.
I don't think so, I know I wouldn't take the risk.
