Scienceworks' annual event celebrating astronomy and light!

Museums Victoria introduce Melbourne families to the wonder of astronomy and light at Scienceworks this Saturday 8 September.

AstroLight Festival at Scienceworks

The AstroLight Festival is set to wow visitors as Scienceworks illuminates the night-sky on Saturday 8 September from 6 - 10:30pm.

Featuring special guests from the Australian Space Agency and Australia’s space industry, Scienceworks invites stargazing families to immerse themselves in all things space on one special night this spring.

The program of activities includes multiple VR experiences (including Opaque Space’s multi-award winning game Earthlight: Spacewalk), night sky viewing through telescopes, hands-on light and optics activities, Planetarium and Lightning Room shows and talks that cover everything from human spaceflight to the nine-week-old Australian Space Agency.

Talks at the AstroLight Festival

There's even an opportunity to pose with a Star Wars character!

Talks include:

International Space Station flight controller Andrea Boyd and former astronaut trainer Dr Gail Illes hitting the main amphitheatre stage to discuss human spaceflight.
Andrea Boyd and aerospace engineer, Dr Naomi Mathers, providing an update on the new Australian Space Agency and the important role that Australia has to play in this accelerating industry.
Ever heard of the concept of Spaghettification? OzGrav researchers Debatri Chattopadhyay, Lucy Strang and Hannah Middleton will enlighten you as they talk about gravitational waves and other exciting developments in astronomy (FYI: spaghettification is what happens when you get too close to a black hole)
Short and sweet talks in the Energy Lab, covering Indigenous astronomy, the discovery of baby planets and how scientists use light to make the regenerating cells of a zebrafish fluoresce. Museums Victoria’s own Dr Christy Hipsley will also be on the line-up, with a presentation on how we use light as a tool in scientific research.

Bar, café and food trucks serving up intergalactic treats all night.
