Beyond Perception at Scienceworks. Permanent gallery space designed by teenagers for teenagers

Melbourne's Scienceworks Museum opened a new permanent gallery on 12 May, 2018; Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen.

This awe-inspiring exhibition has been designed in collaboration with a group of Melbourne teenagers (age 12 - 15) and 28 scientists/engineers from Victoria's top universities & research institutions.

Much like Scienceworks' space for the Under 5s Ground Up: Building Big Ideas, Together, Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen draws on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

The exhibition is said to reveal "the invisible fields and forces that surround us, such as gravitational waves, invisible light, sound and aerodynamics, and demonstrates current research which is continuing to uncover amazing hidden worlds."

Now if you're unsure what that actually means, don't worry too much! There's a lot to take in at Beyond Perception"; a lot to read and do. You will no doubt need more than a few visits to understand the diversity of the space.

The exhibition is split into six key areas:

WRAPPED IN SPECTRUM
The Science: Electromagnetic wave

CACOPHONY

TURBULENT ENCOUNTERS
The Science: Turbulence, Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamics

ENERGETIC VIBRATIONS
The Science: Sound

WAVES AT WORK
The Science: How We Use Waves

RIPPLES IN SPACETIME
The Science: Gravitational waves

Each space is not segregated by room; the gallery has an open-plan feel, offering interesting experiences in each themed division.

The exhibition itself is quite dark throughout, however, the space is designed for visitors to be social and engaged.

While Beyond Perception is designed for teenagers, children younger in age will do doubt enjoy the hands-on activities on offer here.

When speaking to one of the Scienceworks' team members, we are told Beyond Perception is suitable for children as young as 8yrs so there is no need to keep your pre-teens away!

This highly immersive space is located on Level 1, where the 'Nitty Gritty Super City' used to be.

Head to Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen when you next visit Scienceworks. This new exhibition is inclusive of your entry fee.
