A heart-warming stage show has opened at the Fairfax Studio at Arts Centre Melbourne and it's a lovely intimate show for all ages.
Brought to Melbourne by the same production team behind The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and Snail and the Whale, Emily Brown and The Thing is another stage show based on a children's book (by Cressida Cowell the author of How to Train your Dragon and Neal Layton).
Emily Brown and The Thing may not be a story your children are familiar with, however, it doesn't really matter because the subject of this delightful tale resonates with many.
The story follows Emily Brown and her sidekick comfort 'teddy' (Stanley the Rabbit) who hear a ‘Thing’ crying outside their window. The 'Thing' can’t get to sleep, so Emily and Stanley go on some rather adventurous late night escapades to help the 'Thing' settle.
The tale addresses many topics that children and adults can relate to; insomnia, loneliness, gaining confidence, bravery and adventure. However, such subjects are addressed in light-hearted way that do not scare young minds.
Only three actors play all the characters in this intimate stage show, in a stage set that is simple to the eye yet adaptable to each scene.
We enjoyed Emily Brown and The Thing with friends and all children 4, 6 and 9yrs were fully engrossed from start to end.
TIP Arrive early and enjoy some Emily Brown and The Thing themed arts and crafts in the foyer before the show begins. Your child can draw and decorate their very own 'Thing' on paper. If you do miss this before the show, they have the option of crafting a 'Thing' after the performance, too.
