A low cost and enjoyable day out over the school holidays

Looking for an activity for you and your children to enjoy together over the school holiday break? Put the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) on your must-visit list.

The ACMI is Australia's celebration of film, television and digital culture, in an entertainment centre that is unique to Melbourne.

You can't miss the ACMI, positioned right in the heart of the city's iconic Federation Square. You and your family can spend a day here, at a free or low cost. Over each school holiday break, you can choose additional activities to partake in. Some activities are free, others you pay for.

Screen Worlds

Screen Worlds on the ground floor of the ACMI is a permanent gallery, celebrating the history of screen culture. This free exhibit offers fun for families of all ages, with games to play, buttons to press, short film clips to watch, displays and interactive technology to enjoy. The newly developed self-guiding family animation trail allows you to discover the history of animation, and how moving image has evolved.

Games Lab Levels Up

This Easter (2016) sees the newly refurbished Games Lab Levels Up take shape in Screen Worlds. Videogaming has changed since Screen Worlds' first opened its doors to the public in September 2009. As such, the updated Games Lab Level Up sees 10 new videogames set up for you to play for free.

Games include: Lumino City, Journey, Ori and the Blind Forest, Nidhogg, Firewatch, Broken Age, Pro Evolution Soccer 2016, De Blob 2, Mario Kart 8 and a giant Minecraft Mountain!

Kids' Flicks at ACMI Cinema

Going to the movies is incredibly costly for a Melbourne family, but not at the ACMI cinema. Experience some of the city's most unique and cheapest children's movies, as part of the ACMI's Kids' Flicks program.

Over the Easter school holiday break, you can enjoy Moomins on the Riviera or the Japanese animation My Neighbour Toroto for a mere $7 per ticket, or $5 if you are an ACMI Member. Find screening times and book cinema tickets HERE.

ACMI Creative Workshops

There are a number of creative workshops offered at the ACMI over the holidays, and this Easter is no exception. Try your hands at claymation, make a Minecraft movie, or book your kids onto a Young Coders or Film Making workshop (booking costs apply).

ACMI Cafe & Bar

When hunger strikes, why not BYO picnic and enjoy the Autumnal sunshine in Federation Square. You might even catch a comedy performance on The (Very) Big Laugh Out stage, which makes up part of this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Otherwise, if you can stretch your budget a bit further, why not enjoy delicious lunch in the ACMI Cafe & Bar. There's takeaway coffee, and free WiFi, too!

Take a trip to the ACMI in Federation Square this Easter 2016, and enjoy Melbourne's remarkable nugget of educational entertainment, right in the heart of the city.

Can't make it this time? Never mind, the ACMI is open daily 10am to 5pm (closed Christmas Day). The state-of-the-art facility hosts touring exhibitions, film festivals, talks and other special events throughout the year.
