Recently we were asked if we'd like to review two new additions to Kindergo; a reading app designed by BIG kids for little kids.
Unbeknown to us, Kindergo has been the #1 app in over 30 countries for children under 5! The app, founded by QLD mums Nadine Bates and Kristen Souvlis, features world first ‘tap and hear’ technology, encouraging kids in the 2 - 7yr bracket to read by themselves.
My 4yo son took to the app immediately, excited to try his new "game" on the iPad.
Introduced to Kindergo's cute little character, who my son immediately customised in his chosen colours, my 4yo explored each of the themed islands first before choosing an electronic book to read.
Children can choose from several different themed books on each of the islands. Words on the books are highlighted as the stories are narrated to little ears. This makes the words of the book easy to follow for young readers.
My son particularly enjoyed Kindergo's reward system; when an electronic "sticker" is given to the child on completion of a book. Stickers are added to an electronic sticker book, encouraging children to read all the books on each island to complete their sticker page.
Exploring each island with Kindergo's little character also enables little fingers to find hidden words, which leads to another activity. My son loved finding these hidden words and the activity that followed; found words must be placed in an appropriate place to compile a short sentence.
From a grown-up's perspective, I liked hearing the books on the app narrated in an Australian accent and enjoyed the variation of books available. Kindergo's main character is cute, the music is gentle and colours on the app are easy on the eye.
Books are regularly updated with a growing library of book content and new themed islands pop-up as the Kindergo app develops.
The Kindergo app gets a thumbs up from us. Sign up for your free trial here: Kindergo app. Subscription is usually $5.99 each month.
