When your child turns 8, what do you do to celebrate? Playcentres don't quite cut it anymore, and other indoor play activities don't quite have the same qualities as a personalised party.

A Medieval Sword Fighting Party for Mr.8
KidTown Junior recently turned 8. We booked in a very unique party for his coming-of-age, a medieval sword fighting party with Waggle Dance.
What a treat it was for the children, and spectating parents alike.
We arranged our Medieval Sword Fighting Party with Waggle Dance to take place at one of our local parks, where Gindi, a teacher at the School of Historical Fencing, who specialises in medieval and renaissance combat, arrived armed with foam swords.
Although it isn't absolutely necessary to for party attendees to arrive dressed in medieval attire, we were pleased to see some of the kids turn up in medieval inspired wear - it certainly added to the themed fun.
Over the course of the hour, Gindi and his fair maiden introduced the children to knighthood, how to handle a sword correctly and safely, as well as a few basic fighting techniques. Rules were set in place early on; no hitting in faces or backs.
Then on, the games began, including fun activities such as who can 'die' the most theatrically, 'chopping the pole', where teams of defenders had to stop attackers getting to the pole (tree). Teams holding games to keep together as a 'kingdom', and more.
We really appreciated Gindi's patience with the kids, particularly when a few got a little carried away, and his creativity, using the playground's pirate ship equipment as a castle! He proved to be an inventive and enthusiastic party host; just what the 8yo party crew needed.
No stone left unturned with Waggle Dance
On another note, Waggle Dance leaves no stone unturned in the party preparations, meaning we really didn't need to arrange much other than the food and the cake.
Personalised invitations were put together by Waggle Dance, which we were able to either email out or print. Coupled with that, all party attendees were given party balloons, and a certificate at the end of the party.
Medieval shield cake by Driftwood Cakes
We chose to organise a themed cake made by Beth of Driftwood Cakes. Beth has made a number of birthday cakes for our kids, never failing to deliver on taste and aesthetics. Our 8yo's shield cake on this occasion, is no exception.

One final tip, we'd recommend booking in a professional photographer to capture the event, or ask a friend to take lots of photographs for you, because you'll want to see the fun with your own eyes rather than behind a camera or smartphone.
