Degas: A New Vision

The NGV opened Degas: A New Vision in June for this year's Melbourne Winter Masterpieces.

Degas: A New Vision - World Premiere at NGV

Edgar Degas was an artist famed for his portrayals of modern life in the 1800s. His works include painted Paris’ dance halls and cabarets, cafés, racetracks, opera and ballet stages.

Some of Degas’ most famous masterworks are presented including the bronze sculpture The little fourteen-year-old dancer, 1879–81, and In a café (The Absinthe drinker), c. 1875–76. World-renowned paintings, never-before-seen in Australia, are also exhibited such as the celebrated ballet paintings The rehearsal, c. 1874, and Finishing the arabesque, 1877, and Degas’ monumental portrait The Bellelli family, 1867.

Degas: A New Vision opened as a world premiere right here at the NGV in Melbourne. The exhibition displaying the largest collection of Degas' works to come to Australia, travelling from 65 lenders in more than 40 cities from all over the world.

NGV: Degas A New Vision for Kids

Is Degas; A New Vision suitable for children? Absolutely, although school-age children would probably get the most out of the exhibition.

The exhibition is presented in a traditional way that evokes quiet reflection. That's not to say children must be 'seen and not heard', more-so take in the artwork rather than run amok. Many school groups walk through the exhibtion, which is enough to suggest children are most welcome!

There are opportunities presented to children to take in the works through the eyes of a youngster. Key artworks are presented with separate thought-provoking descriptions for kids, alongside adult write-ups.

Degas: An Art Book For Kids

The NGV presents at art book for kids to coincide with the winter masterpiece exhibition.
