Out in the Dandenong Ranges, east of Melbourne, is a great family activity that's as enjoyable for adults as it is for kids: Puffing Billy. Here, you can catch one of a series of steam trains along a century-old heritage railway through the beautiful ranges.
The train can be caught from Belgrave to as far as Gembrook, though most trips end earlier, at Lakeside. The shorter route takes just over an hour, while the longer one is closer to two hours. Most people chose to do a return trip, but you can get single tickets.
Throughout the year, Puffing Billy also holds special events with themed rides. For example, a Day Out With Thomas (the Tank Engine) is held on certain weekends, while in November and December kids get to see Santa when the train stops at Emerald.
Tickets for Puffing Billy are not cheap, but family discounts are available. The average return trip for an adult costs $51.50, and for a child it's $26.50. A family ticket (two adults and up to four children) is $104.00.
