The Sleeping Beauty: Once upon a Time is a children's version of the fully staged production running with the Australian Ballet and we were lucky to go along today for KidTown Melbourne.
My 3 year old daughter and almost 4 year old niece are little ballerinas and like most little girls – princess obsessed!
The magic of the day begun for us at the train station where we spotted our first little princess on the way into the city with her nanna. The girls all admired each others dresses and from then on we spotted more and more little princesses hopping on the train until we arrived at the arts centre where there was more glitter and ruffles than you have ever seen before! We even spied some little boys dressed up in chinos and vests like little princes!
The show itself was narrated at the beginning and end of each act by Catalautte the kings staff who forgot to invite the black fairy to the Christening who was the cause of the Sleeping Beauty spell. He invited the children to interact with him, by asking them questions and to join in. During the acts themselves though it was hard not to be mesmerised by the beautiful set, costumes and amazing dancers floating and skipping around the stage.
The show lasted for an hour with no interval, while my 3 year old daughter had probably had almost enough, my 4 year old niece said “I wish I could stay here all day!”
I highly recommend taking your children to the ballet if there is another child firendly production such as this or if you are lucky enough to be in Sydney in November you will find it playing there then.
Parents or carers of older children may be interested in the Behind the Scenes production which offers children 10 plus the opportunity to view a morning class, then sit in on a rehersal.
Behind the Scenes is on Grand Final Eve Friday September 29 at 11.30am.
