A mischeivously impressive production by shake & stir theatre co
George is concocting his Marvellous Medicine in theatres all over Victoria from May until October, so...."Grandma better start to pray!"
shake & stir theatre co's on-stage adaption of Roald Dahl's book is an excellent family show filled with a heavy dose of humour, top notch acting and incredible moving sets that adapt to each scene.
George's Marvellous Medicine tells the tale of a mischievous young boy, George, who is left to care for his ungrateful, mean and smelly Grandma.
George must give his "almost witchlike" Grandma her medicine at 11 o' clock. On this occasion, George has an idea! Why not craft a special medicine, a magical potion "just to kind of shake her up a bit," and that he does!
Having seen two shake & stir theatre co productions before (albeit very different topics; Dracula and Wuthering Heights), I had high hopes for George's Marvellous Medicine and was not at all disappointed!
The show kicks off with a bang. A musical intro with funky beats "Don't get up to mischief!". Despite the 'retro' styled set, the script is sprinkled with pop culture references. There's hip hop and flossing thrown in for good measure, too.
All the actors involved in George's Marvellous Medicine are brilliant at what they do. Considering some of these actors have previously played much darker roles, they've adapted to Roald Dahl's cheeky characters so well. It can't be easy to play the role of a giant chicken, a kung-fu fighting goat or an ill-tempered over-sized Grandma for that matter!
Roald Dahl's George's Marvellous Medicine by shake & stir theatre co is aimed at audience members 6 - 106yrs. That being said, both of my boys (4 and 9yrs) thoroughly enjoyed George's Marvellous Medicine from beginning to end. The hour-long duration is perfect for performance, too.
Go and see Roald Dahl's George's Marvellous Medicine live on stage if you can. This is one of the best kid's theatre shows we've seen in a very, very long time.
