Rock-climbing for kids

Hard Rock, Nunawading

Children need to expend energy and parents prefer that they do so by participating in physical activities which preferably do not include squabbling with siblings. Many children can occupy themselves by playing outside with a ball, skating board, trampoline, etc. However, it is a good idea for parents to take them to organized activities as a treat or entertainment once in a while. One such activity that most kids I know love is rock-climbing.

When I decided to take my children rock-climbing, a quick google search revealed that not all rock-climbing centers are fit for children. However, rock-climbing at Hard Rock located in Nunawading offers a wide variety of climbing opportunities to adults along with children. Therefore, this was our obvious choice.

Visitors enjoying the activity

We took the children during the Easter holidays and despite that, it was not very busy. We spent a whole afternoon after which the children were truly satiated: they had their fill of fun and were truly exhausted (in a good way). As for the parents, well I can say for myself that my shoulders had experienced a rather vigorous workout by the end.

Special rock-climbing shoes

As a first-time visitor, the friendly staff gave us a quick and brief overview of what to expect, how to ensure our childrens' safety and other rules and regulations that we were expected to follow to make the day a success for everyone. There is an Agreement Form that needs to be signed for every child participant by their guardian. Also to be noted is that for every climber, there is one person who “belays” i.e. holds the rope for safety purposes, which involves learning to tie a special knot that is quick and easy to learn.

Entry price includes all the equipment necessary including shoes. The facility has lockers to safely store your belongings while climbing (highly recommended). Remember to wear socks and appropriate attire for climbing. Also remember to bring a water bottle and a snack to keep yourself and the children well-hydrated and energized.

Lockers for your convenience

The climbing walls have a variety of rock-climbing arrangements that cater for different age and skill levels which are clearly identified. The thrill of climbing and the sense of achievement after completing a course brings a smile on every child’s face. For those who cannot complete the course, the success is in trying and not giving up. So everyone is a winner (and hopefully there are no tears).

The facility also provides courses and trainings (information is available online). There is a shortage of parking at the facility; visitors will probably need to street park. I think it is safe to say that you should allow 2-3 hours minimum to fully enjoy your visit to this rock-climbing facility. I highly recommend this activity for all children and especially the ones who love to be involved in physical activity and need a challenge to test their abilities.
