Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens are a great place for a family picnic
The 38 hectare area has heaps of different sections, many of them a great place for a picnic or family event (you'll need to head over to the Yarra River if you want to barbecue though). Even the dog can be brought along (if it's kept on a leash).
After you've eaten there's lots to explore, like the walks, open lawns, gardens, greenhouses and more than one lake.

The Herb Garden isn't just pretty to look at
The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden is located near the Visitor Centre. It's open 10am to sunset between Wednesday and Sunday, on Public Holidays, and every day during the school holidays.
The rest of the gardens are open every day from 7.30am until sunset.
Special events are held here throughout the year (particularly during the school holiday periods). These include outdoor cinema and theatre performances (like The Wind in the Willows in January).
