A trip to the zoo is always a hit with the kids and a day at Werribee Open Range Zoo is a unique safari experience that is not to be missed.

You can hop on board a bus for a 40 minute safari tour through the zoo’s savannah to see giraffes, zebras and rhinos up close in a natural open environment. The bus tour includes commentary from a zoo guide, there is pram parking and buses leave every ten minutes so the wait time with excited children is minimal.

The savannah vibe flows through to the African animal viewing area, a winding walking trek that takes you past the gorillas, hippos, lions and cheetahs. This section of the zoo is a play haven for kids – dotted throughout the trek there are countless sandpits, climbing frames, a fantastic hippo water play area, chalkboards and a safari jeep that you can sit in and view the lions from.

The fun continues over at Ranger Kids, an indoor play space which has an African village, a savannah and a field hospital. There is a big focus on imaginative play in here with a puppet theatre and dress ups.

While the emphasis is on all things Africa at Werribee, there is also a cleverly designed native Australian animal display. There's the Bandicoot Hideout, a dark indoor enclosure where you can see bandicoots, squirrels, frogs and a beautiful Tawny Frogmouth owl. Then out to the open grasslands to discover kangaroos, koalas and a replica shearing shed which the kids love running through like a maze. There is another fantastic playground and open grass area in this section to stop at for a play.

Werribee Open Range Zoo is a fantastic experience for young and old, with interactive play options galore and a fantastic range of animals to get up close and personal with. There are paid zoo experiences such as going behind the scenes with the gorillas and feeding the giraffes. They also host lots of unique events throughout the year and run regular programs such as Meet The Keeper and Toddler Week Days.
