A review of The Gruffalo ahead of The Gruffalo's Child at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne.
The following review is written by Jen Gurney.
I have grown up with a huge love for the theatre. My 3 year old daughter has a huge love for Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler books.
The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
When KidTown Melbourne shared the news that The Gruffalo was coming to town I very hastily booked my family Premium stalls tickets. As the date loomed closer and closer I started to over think the situation more and more.
How would my 3 year old cope in a 'real' theatre environment? Would she be able to follow the story on stage as opposed to a book? Would she get bored? Would she sit still? Would she be quiet?
I needn't have worried and honestly could not have chosen a better show to take her to.
The whole production was tailored towards young audience. The Gruffalo's story was brought to life in a unique and imaginative way.
The Gruffalo, live on stage
The actors actively encouraged audience participation to shout out, clap and laugh. At one point all the young children in the audience became enthusiatic little gruffalos themselves!
The atmosphere was magical; a brilliant performance for any young child to experience.
My 3 year old had an amazing time all my worring had been for nothing. I'm already planning our next theatre trip to The Gruffalo's Child at the same Athenaeum Theatre. Not even the big bad mouse will keep us away ...
