For well over a century one of the most popular and affordable activities for families has been the humble picnic. Here in Melbourne we've got some spectacular parks, gardens and beaches, while just a short drive from the city, there are many spectacular National Parks and nature reserves.

In your opinion, what are Melbourne's best family picnic spots? What else is there to do at these places and why do kids enjoy them so much?

For a picnic in the city, any of Melbourne's beautiful parks and gardens are wonderful. Catani Park, not far from St Kilda Beach is also a great spot as there is so much to see and do nearby! The picnic tables are sheltered too, which is convenient if it's a hot day or a bit rainy.

Outside of the city, the Dandenong National Park is a personal favourite...it's a real treat taking the Puffing Billy train up to Emerald Lake Park for a picnic!
I like having a picnic in Frankston Botanic Gardens.
I really like hanging rock for picnics, although I guess it can be a little creepy...
I love the Royal Botanical Gardens. That little park at St Kilda Beach (near Luna Park) is small but popular. Yarra Park and Kings Domain.
I love St Kilda Botanic gardens it's huge with a hothouse, divine rose garden, big playground, plenty of lawn and shade and a good ice cream parlor within walking distance for after!
